Nassau County participates in several initiatives designed to avert subsurface discharges that may endanger groundwater resources. These initiatives encompass the Petroleum Bulk Storage program, Toxic and Hazardous Materials Storage Program, Sewer Connection Program, and the closure of On-Site Sanitary Systems, as well as monitoring inactive hazardous waste sites and the Underground Injection Control program (UIC). The county has also launched the Septic Environmental Program to Improve Cleanliness (SEPTIC), which provides grant funding to qualifying residents and small businesses for replacing outdated or malfunctioning septic systems with advanced onsite wastewater treatment systems. Homeowners and small businesses can receive grants of up to $20,000 to install cutting-edge nitrogen-reducing septic systems in non-sewered areas.
