Jerusalem Avenue School

This program is dedicated to assisting children who require a highly structured educational setting and who are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders or pervasive developmental disorder (PDD). With small class sizes, the environment is conducive to intensive learning. Students are taught essential on-task behaviors that resemble those in a traditional school setting, as well as strategies to foster their independence. The program employs Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) techniques to modify behaviors and introduce new skills through consistent practice and positive reinforcement. Instruction includes Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and utilizes a comprehensive communication system that incorporates spoken language, photographs, symbols, and sign language to enhance communication abilities. The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is also implemented to facilitate social exchanges for expressing needs. Additionally, trained staff are available to manage any mealtime challenges, such as limited food preferences. A collaborative team of educators, social workers, psychologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech therapists, and administrative staff works together to address the unique educational requirements of each child. All students participate in adapted physical education and music programs, and family involvement is highly encouraged, with parent training offered throughout the academic year. Workshops are available both during the day and in the evening to help parents develop skills and implement behavioral strategies, along with ongoing support groups led by a social worker.
