Woodward Parkway School

The school is specifically designed for students with moderate to severe developmental disabilities, offering an instructional program that adheres to the New York State Standards for Students with Severe Disabilities and the New York State Common Core Learning Standards. This program aims to boost students' confidence and abilities, emphasizing the development of communication skills and personal independence. It employs evidence-based approaches, including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), visual strategies, the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), augmentative communication systems, functional behavioral assessments, and positive behavioral supports. The Rosemary Kennedy School includes elementary, middle, and high school classes, along with district-based classes that offer mainstreaming opportunities. Community-based instruction is integral to the curriculum, enhancing traditional classroom learning through recreational activities (like libraries and bowling), life skills training (such as grocery shopping and dining out), volunteer opportunities (at Mercy Hospital and Hofstra University), and vocational experiences in local businesses (like fast food restaurants and retail stores). Each student receives education from a multidisciplinary team that includes the classroom teacher, aides, psychologist, social worker, related service providers, curriculum specialists, and administrators. Parental involvement is encouraged through daily communication notebooks, conferences, visits, training sessions, and support groups. Transition planning for students aged 12 to 21 is coordinated by vocational rehabilitation counselors and social workers, in collaboration with students and their families, before graduation.
