Gary D. Bixhorn Technical Center

This initiative is tailored for individuals between the ages of 16 and 21 who are either directed to the center as a court-recommended placement or are at-risk students whose educational needs are not being adequately addressed in their current school environments. The program aims to equip students with the necessary skills to fulfill the requirements for a Regents, Local, or High School Equivalency Diploma. It incorporates contextualized learning, career readiness, and skills development into everyday lessons. Utilizing a non-traditional educational approach, the program enhances academic success and allows students to apply their skills in practical settings through collaborative work experiences at Pal-O-Mine’s Equestrian, Inc. Additionally, the program includes both individual and group counseling, substance abuse support, and training in employment and soft skills. Each participant's treatment plan is customized to meet their unique needs, strengths, and challenges. The program offers a comprehensive range of transitional services, with each student collaborating with a counselor to create a personalized transition plan that addresses educational, employment, and transportation needs, while also linking them to community resources. Eastern Suffolk BOCES has established partnerships with various federal, state, and local agencies to enhance support for at-risk students.
