James E. Allen Jr./Sr. High School
Community Resource
About this resource
This program caters to students between the ages of 12 and 21 who have diverse disabilities and need significant assistance. Instruction in the classroom aligns with the Common Core Learning Standards, with a strong focus on building life skills to ensure students can transition into supportive job settings after graduation. It offers numerous training options for supportive employment, including a fully equipped Work Activities Center. Many students engage in travel training to promote independent movement within their communities. A majority also work at community-based vocational sites alongside non-disabled peers to gain practical experience. The program utilizes a collaborative approach, involving related service staff, psychologists, and social workers who work together with classroom educators to enhance each student's potential. Additionally, a consulting psychiatrist is available for developmentally disabled students who have psychiatric needs. The primary goals of this initiative are to foster functional and independent living skills for everyday tasks and to prepare students for success in the New York State Alternate Assessments.
