Westhampton Beach Learning Center @ Shoreham-Wading River High School

This program caters to students between the ages of 13 and 21 who are in grades 8-12 and have various developmental disabilities. Its main objective is to enhance each student's capabilities and teach them skills that foster independence within their individual limitations. The program includes academic instruction with a focus on practical skill enhancement, alongside simulated work experiences to apply what they have learned. It also addresses behavior management, independent living, and social skills. When necessary, techniques such as discrete trial teaching and applied behavioral analysis are integrated with the standard curriculum. Functional assessments and behavior intervention plans are implemented for additional support as required. Students may have classifications such as Multiple Disabilities, Autism, Intellectual Disability, Emotional Disturbance, Speech Impairment, and Other Health Impairment. Additionally, the Secondary Developmental Program aims to maximize potential and teach independence through cognitive improvement and sensory motor skills development. The 12:1:4 Program adopts a multi-sensory learning approach, focusing on cognitive enhancement and the use of adaptive tools to promote movement and independence, with staff assistance provided throughout the school day. Related services, including speech, occupational therapy, and physical therapy, are offered in a group setting. All participants are evaluated using the New York State Alternate Assessment. The District Based Program, which operates half a day at WHBLC @ Shoreham-Wading River High School and half a day at H.B. Ward Career & Tech SCE or TSP @ BLC, aims to equip students with work skills for entry-level employment or to assist in their transitional plans.
