About this resource
The Veterans Justice Outreach (VJO) initiative seeks to prevent the unnecessary criminalization of mental health disorders and the prolonged imprisonment of veterans by ensuring that those eligible and interacting with the criminal justice system have access to mental health and substance abuse services provided by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). The VJO evaluates individual needs, identifies suitable resources, refers qualified veterans to necessary services, and acts as a liaison among the VA, courts, attorneys, and community organizations. However, the VJO does not offer legal counsel, conduct forensic psychological evaluations for the courts, take custody of veterans, or guarantee acceptance into VA programs.
