The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly referred to as food stamps, is available for eligible individuals. Benefits are provided via an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card, known as the Oregon Trail Card.
Application Process: To apply, individuals must submit an application and participate in an interview, which can be conducted either in-person or by phone with an ODHS eligibility worker. There are several ways to apply: -Visit a local ODHS Self-Sufficiency Office (note that Processing Centers do not provide in-person services) -Submit an application online -Download a PDF application, complete it, and send it by mail, fax, or deliver it in person -Call the office to request a mailed application After submitting the application: -The local ODHS office will contact the applicant to schedule an in-person or phone interview -Applicants can reach out to the local ODHS office to arrange the interview -ODHS workers will not leave messages on voicemails that do not include the applicant's name in the greeting.
Cost: There are no fees associated with this program.
Who can use this
- Eligibility is assessed individually, with income limits set at 200% of the federal poverty level or lower, based on monthly earnings before taxes. Other considerations for eligibility and the amount of monthly SNAP benefits include income sources, housing and utility costs, medical expenses for those aged 60 and older or disabled, and family member relationships. Additional criteria may apply for students, immigrants, and adults aged 18-52 without dependents. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or meet specific non-citizen criteria.
Documents you may need
- No documents are required to submit an application. The following documents may be requested during or after the interview: -Social Security number (SSN) for everyone who wishes to apply for benefits (not required to provide Social Security card) -Proof of gross income for the last 30 days (pay stubs, a letter from the employer, an award letter, for self-employment bank statements showing business revenue and costs) -Non-citizens must provide legal documentation for ODHS to determine if they meet the eligibility criteria. Some examples include I-94, Permanent Resident Card, I-551, Employment Authorization, and I-688B. -Photo ID may be helpful but is not required. ODHS can verify identity with an SSN or another method. -Applicants experiencing homelessness will need a temporary mailing address to apply. An eligibility worker will assist if other documents are needed. -Applicants who have trouble obtaining proof of income or other documents can have an eligibility worker help them obtain income verification and other needed information -Adults age 60 and older and adults with disabilities may be eligible for increased benefits by providing proof of their out-of-pocket medical expenses
