Multnomah County Health Department

This program focuses on decreasing the amount of discarded syringes in downtown Portland. Injection drug users have access to two secure disposal bins situated on the waterfront of Portland, where they can safely dispose of used needles and syringes. A biohazard contractor is responsible for the regular emptying of these bins. Additionally, the initiative includes targeted outreach efforts by Multnomah County health workers to engage with injection drug users, along with a public awareness campaign.

Intake Procedure: The disposal bins can be found on the west Portland waterfront beneath the Burnside Bridge and on the Eastbank Esplanade close to Salmon Street. If a disposal box is either full or damaged, individuals should contact the Portland Bureau of Transportation dispatch line.

Travel/Location: The service is located in Menlo Park Plaza, behind Walgreens.
