About this resource

The center focuses on minimizing preventable injuries among children by providing educational resources, training, and a range of childproofing items such as safety gates, helmets, and protective gear at prices lower than retail. Located at Doernbecher Children's Hospital, the Tom Sargent Safety Center features a weekday car seat inspection service available by appointment. Certified technicians are on hand to inspect car seats and offer practical guidance. Affordable car seats can be purchased for eligible families, and assistance is available for those outside the Metro area to access local child safety resources. For residents of the Portland Metro area, virtual car seat inspections are also an option. In collaboration with the Kohl's Foundation, the center supports a Safe Sleep Program, offering cribs and sheets at reduced prices for qualifying low-income families through the Cribs for Kids Program, which aims to ensure a safe sleep environment for infants to help prevent SUID and other sleep-related deaths. Halo Sleep Sacks and Swaddlers are also available for purchase.
