This initiative is a partnership involving Suffolk County Community College, Longwood Central School District, governmental bodies, and the business sector to create a supportive and comprehensive environment for students who may be at risk of leaving school prematurely. Funded by a grant from the New York State Education Department, the Liberty Partnerships Program (LPP) targets students in grades 7-12 who are not achieving their full academic potential by offering services designed to help them finish high school and transition successfully to higher education or the workforce. Junior and senior LPP participants can take part in a two-semester program that awards one college credit upon successful completion. The first semester includes a non-credit course that emphasizes reading, writing, study skills, critical thinking, and computer proficiency. The second semester covers college-relevant topics and enhances research skills. Additional credit-bearing courses are available for those who complete this program. Services provided by the LPP include: college preparatory classes; a seminar at Suffolk County Community College (which earns 1.0 college credits); a club and newsletter; team-building activities; cultural enrichment trips; counseling; tutoring and college placement test assistance; ACT/SAT prep classes; Regents review sessions; leadership training for students and parents; and workforce preparation, including internships and visits to local businesses and colleges.
