About this resource
This program provides monthly payments to individuals who have a work history or are unable to work because of a disability. Payments may begin after the sixth full month of disability. Recipients of SSDI may also qualify for Medicare benefits.
Application Process: To apply, individuals can call to schedule an appointment at a local Social Security office or submit an application online. The Social Security Administration may expedite applications for those with certain rare diseases and cancers.
Cost: There are no fees associated with this program.
Who can use this
- Eligibility is partially based on an individual's work history, requiring five years of work in the last decade and sufficient credits to be considered 'insured.' A severe disability must prevent the individual from working for at least 12 months or lead to death, with periodic medical reviews to assess the ability to return to work.
