About this resource
This program provides monthly payments to individuals who have a work history or are unable to work because of a disability. Payments may commence after the sixth full month of the disability. Additionally, those receiving SSDI may qualify for Medicare benefits.
Application Process: Interested individuals should contact their local Social Security office to schedule an appointment or can apply through the internet. The Social Security Administration may expedite applications for certain rare diseases and cancer patients.
Cost: There are no fees associated with this service.
Who can use this
- Eligibility is based on prior work experience, requiring applicants to have worked five years within the last decade and earned sufficient credits to be considered 'insured.' A severe disability that prevents work for at least 12 months or leads to death is necessary, and recipients undergo periodic medical evaluations to assess their ability to return to work.
