This program offers monthly cash assistance to qualified survivors of deceased workers covered by Social Security, along with a one-time payment of $255 to the surviving spouse.

Intake Process: For help, you can either call or visit a nearby Social Security office. If the surviving spouse or child eligible for benefits is not currently receiving them, they need to submit an application for this payment within two years following the date of death.

Cost: There are no fees associated with this program.

Who can use this

Monthly Payments are available to widows or widowers aged 60 or older (or 50 or older if disabled), any age if caring for the deceased’s child under 16 or disabled, unmarried children under 18 (or up to 19 if full-time students), individuals 18 or older with disabilities that started before age 22, certain stepchildren or grandchildren, and parents aged 62 or older who depended on the deceased for at least half of their support. The one-time payment is for the spouse living with the worker; if living apart, they can still receive it if they were receiving benefits or became eligible upon the worker's death. Children are eligible only if there is no surviving spouse.
