This program offers monthly cash assistance to qualified survivors of deceased workers covered by Social Security, along with a one-time payment of $255 for the surviving spouse.
Application Steps: For help, call or go to a nearby Social Security office. If the eligible surviving spouse or child is not already receiving benefits, they must submit an application for this payment within two years following the death.

Who can use this
- Monthly Payments are available to widows or widowers aged 60 or older (50 or older if disabled), any age caring for the deceased’s child under 16 or disabled, unmarried children under 18 (or up to 19 if full-time students), those aged 18 or older with disabilities that began before 22, certain stepchildren, grandchildren, or adopted children, and parents aged 62 or older who were dependent on the deceased. The one-time payment is for a spouse living in the same household, or if living apart, they may still receive the lump sum if they were receiving benefits or became eligible upon the worker's death; children are eligible only if there is no surviving spouse.
