This program provides monthly financial support to eligible survivors of workers who were covered under Social Security and have passed away. It also includes a one-time payment of $255 to the surviving spouse.

Application Procedure: Individuals can seek help by calling or visiting a local Social Security office. If the surviving spouse or child is not already receiving benefits, they need to apply for this payment within two years following the worker's death.

Who can use this

Monthly payments are available for widows or widowers aged 60 or older (or 50 or older if disabled), those of any age caring for the deceased's child under 16 or disabled, unmarried children under 18 (or up to 19 if full-time students), disabled individuals over 18 whose disability began before age 22, certain stepchildren, grandchildren, or adopted children, and parents aged 62 or older who depended on the deceased for at least half of their support. The one-time payment is for spouses living in the same household as the worker, or those who were apart but were receiving or eligible for benefits at the time of the worker's death.
