This program offers monthly cash payments to qualifying survivors of deceased workers covered by Social Security, along with a one-time $255 payment to the surviving spouse.

Application Process: To receive assistance, individuals can call or visit a nearby Social Security office. If the eligible surviving spouse or child is not already receiving benefits, they must submit their application for this payment within two years following the date of death.

Costs: There are no fees associated with this program.

Who can use this

Monthly Payments are available for widows or widowers aged 60 or older (50 or older if disabled), any age caring for the deceased’s child under 16 or disabled, unmarried children under 18 (or up to 19 if full-time students), children aged 18 or older with disabilities starting before age 22, and certain stepchildren, grandchildren, or adopted children. Parents aged 62 or older who were dependent on the deceased for at least half of their support are also eligible. The one-time payment is for the spouse living in the same household as the worker, or if living apart, they can still receive it if they were receiving benefits or became eligible upon the worker's death.
