This program offers monthly cash assistance to qualifying survivors of deceased workers covered by Social Security, along with a one-time payment of $255 to the surviving spouse.

Intake Process: Individuals can call for help or go to a local Social Security office. If the eligible surviving spouse or child is not already receiving benefits, they need to apply for this payment within two years following the date of death.

Fees: There are no fees associated with this program.

Who can use this

Monthly Payments are available for widows or widowers aged 60 or older (50 or older if disabled), any age caring for the deceased’s child under 16 or disabled, unmarried children under 18 (or up to 19 if full-time students), individuals 18 or older with a disability that began before age 22, certain stepchildren, grandchildren, or adopted children, and parents aged 62 or older who were dependent on the deceased for at least half their support. The one-time payment is for the spouse living in the same house as the worker; if living apart, they can still receive it if they were receiving benefits or became eligible upon the worker's death. Children are eligible only if there is no surviving spouse.
