Application Process: Individuals can seek help by calling or by visiting a local Social Security office. If the surviving spouse or child is not already receiving benefits, they need to submit an application for this payment within two years following the worker's death.

Who can use this

Eligible recipients include widows or widowers aged 60 or older (50 or older if disabled), any age caring for the deceased’s child under 16 or disabled, unmarried children under 18 (or up to 19 if in school), disabled children over 18 with disabilities that began before age 22, certain stepchildren and grandchildren, and parents aged 62 or older who were dependent on the deceased. The one-time payment is available to spouses living in the same household or those who were apart but were receiving or eligible for benefits at the time of the worker's death.
