About this resource

This program provides monthly financial assistance to individuals with disabilities, both adults and children, whose income and resources fall below certain financial thresholds. In Washington, there is an extra state supplement available, and participants automatically qualify for Medicaid and food assistance.

Application Process: Individuals can either call to set up an appointment at a local office or submit their application online. When applying for SSI, applicants will be given the option to also apply for food benefits, choosing between the Basic Food Benefits plan or WASHCAP (Washington State Combined Application Program) benefits.

Cost: There are no fees associated with this program.

Who can use this

Eligible low-income clients can receive SSI benefits if they are 65 years or older, or younger than 65 and either blind or disabled. WASHCAP benefits are available to SSI recipients who are at least 18 years old, have no earned income, and live independently or purchase and prepare food separately from others in their household.
