This program offers monthly cash assistance to qualified survivors of deceased workers covered by Social Security, along with a one-time payment of $255 for the surviving spouse.
Application Process: For help, contact a local Social Security office or call. If the surviving spouse or child is not already receiving benefits, they must submit an application for this payment within two years following the worker's death.
Cost: There are no fees associated.
Who can use this
- Monthly Payments are available to widows or widowers aged 60 or older (50 or older if disabled), any age caring for the deceased’s child under 16 or disabled, unmarried children under 18 (or up to 19 if full-time students), individuals over 18 with disabilities starting before age 22, certain stepchildren or adopted children, and parents aged 62 or older who depended on the deceased for at least half of their support. The one-time payment is for spouses living in the same household, or those who were apart but were receiving benefits or became eligible upon the worker's death; children can only receive benefits if there is no surviving spouse.
