This program offers monthly cash assistance to qualifying survivors of deceased workers covered by Social Security, along with a one-time payment of $255 to the spouse.
Application Steps: Individuals can call for help or go to a nearby Social Security office. If the eligible spouse or child is not already receiving benefits, they need to submit their application for this payment within two years following the worker's death.

Who can use this
- Monthly Payments are available to widows or widowers aged 60 or older (50 or older if disabled), any age if caring for the deceased’s child under 16 or disabled, unmarried children under 18 (up to 19 if full-time students), disabled individuals over 18 with disabilities that began before age 22, certain stepchildren, grandchildren, or adopted children, and parents over 62 who depended on the deceased for at least half of their support. The one-time payment is for spouses living in the same household, or those who can prove eligibility if living apart at the time of death.
