About this resource

This program provides monthly financial assistance to eligible survivors of workers who were covered under Social Security and have passed away. It also includes a one-time payment of $255 for the surviving spouse.

Application Process: For help, individuals can call or visit a local Social Security office. If the surviving spouse or child is not already receiving benefits, they need to submit their application for this payment within two years following the death.

Cost: There are no fees involved.

Who can use this

Monthly Payments are available for widows or widowers aged 60 or older (or 50 if disabled), any age caring for the deceased’s child under 16 or disabled, unmarried children under 18 (or up to 19 if full-time students), individuals aged 18 or older with a disability that started before age 22, and certain stepchildren or adopted children. Parents aged 62 or older who relied on the deceased for at least half of their support may also qualify. The one-time payment is for the spouse living in the same household, or if living apart, they may still receive it if they were receiving benefits or became eligible upon the worker's death.
