About this resource
This program provides monthly payments to individuals who have a work history or are unable to work because of a disability. Payments may commence after the sixth full month of the disability. Additionally, those receiving SSDI may qualify for Medicare benefits.
Application Process: Schedule an appointment at a local Social Security office or submit an application online. The Social Security Administration may expedite applications for individuals with certain rare diseases and cancer.
Cost: There are no fees associated with this program.
Who can use this
- Eligibility is based on previous work experience, requiring applicants to have worked five years within the last decade and earned sufficient credits to be deemed "insured." A qualifying severe disability must prevent the applicant from working for at least 12 months or lead to death, with ongoing medical reviews to assess the ability to return to work.
