About this resource
This program provides monthly financial support to qualified survivors of workers who were covered under Social Security and have passed away. It also includes a one-time payment of $255 for the surviving spouse.
To apply, individuals should either call for help or visit a nearby Social Security office. If the surviving spouse or child is not already receiving benefits, they are required to submit an application for this payment within two years following the worker's death.
There are no associated fees.
Who can use this
- Eligible recipients include widows or widowers aged 60 or older (50 or older if disabled), any age caring for a child of the deceased under 16 or disabled, unmarried children under 18 (or up to 19 if full-time students), individuals aged 18 or older with a disability that began before 22, certain stepchildren or grandchildren, and parents aged 62 or older who were dependent on the deceased. The one-time payment is available to the spouse living in the same household, or to children if no spouse exists.
