About this resource
This program provides monthly financial support to qualifying survivors of workers who were covered by Social Security and have passed away. It also includes a one-time payment of $255 for the surviving spouse.
Application Process: Interested individuals can call for help or go to a nearby Social Security office. If the eligible spouse or child is not already receiving benefits, they need to submit their application for this payment within two years following the date of death.
Cost: There are no fees associated.
Who can use this
- Eligible recipients include widows or widowers aged 60 or older (or 50 if disabled), any age caring for a child of the deceased under 16 or disabled, unmarried children under 18 (or up to 19 if full-time students), disabled children over 18 with disabilities that began before age 22, certain stepchildren and grandchildren, and parents aged 62 or older dependent on the deceased for at least half their support. Surviving spouses can receive a one-time payment if they lived with the worker or were receiving benefits at the time of death.
