About this resource

This program provides monthly cash assistance to qualifying survivors of workers who were covered under Social Security and have passed away. It also includes a one-time payment of $255 to the surviving spouse.

Intake Process: For help, individuals can either call or visit a nearby Social Security office. If the eligible surviving spouse or child is not already receiving benefits, they must submit an application for this payment within two years from the date of death.

Fees: There are no fees associated with this program.

Who can use this

Monthly Payments are available for widows or widowers aged 60 or older (50 or older if disabled), those of any age caring for the deceased’s child under 16 or disabled, unmarried children under 18 (or up to 19 if in school), disabled individuals over 18 with disabilities starting before age 22, certain stepchildren, grandchildren, and dependent parents aged 62 or older. The one-time payment is for the spouse living in the same household, or if living apart, they can still receive it if they were receiving benefits or became eligible upon the worker's death. Children are eligible only if there is no surviving spouse.
