About this resource
This program provides monthly financial assistance to individuals who have a work history or are unable to work because of a disability. Payments may commence after the sixth full month of the disability. Additionally, those receiving SSDI might qualify for Medicare benefits.
Application Process: Individuals can schedule an appointment at their nearest Social Security office or submit an application online. The Social Security Administration may expedite applications for individuals with certain rare diseases or cancer.
Cost: There are no associated fees.
Who can use this
- To qualify, applicants must have a work history that includes five years of employment within the last decade and sufficient credits to be considered "insured." They must also have a serious disability that prevents them from working for at least 12 months or leads to death, with periodic medical evaluations to assess their ability to return to work.
