About this resource

This program provides monthly cash payments to qualifying survivors of workers who were covered by Social Security and have passed away. Additionally, it includes a one-time payment of $255 to the surviving spouse.

Intake Procedure: For assistance, individuals can call or visit a local Social Security office. If the eligible surviving spouse or child is not currently receiving benefits, they must submit an application for this payment within two years from the date of death.

Fees: There are no fees associated with this program.

Who can use this

Monthly Payments are available for widows or widowers aged 60 or older (50 or older if disabled), any age caring for the deceased’s child under 16 or disabled, unmarried children under 18 (or up to 19 if in school), disabled individuals over 18 with disabilities that began before age 22, certain stepchildren, grandchildren, and parents over 62 who were dependent on the deceased. The one-time payment is for a spouse living in the same household or for those who were living apart but were receiving or became eligible for benefits upon the worker's death. Children are eligible only if there is no surviving spouse.
