Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare, along with several state and local organizations. Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They cater to local demands by offering a diverse range of services, which can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and public health crises. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems, covering areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Waterborne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Indoor Air Quality, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste management. Land Development programs encompass Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage evaluations. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Immunization services are provided for routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics or special off-site events, often at low or no cost for families in need. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track immunizations for families and their healthcare providers. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program provides healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition education, and referrals to healthcare providers for eligible pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women’s Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for uninsured women who meet specific income criteria and age requirements.
