About this resource

The Medical Reserve Corps can be reached at 208-239-5208, and the Swine Flu Hotline for Region 6 is available at 208-234-5888. Idaho's seven health districts operate in close partnership with the Department of Health and Welfare, as well as numerous state and local organizations. Each district has a board of health appointed by county commissioners and functions independently of any state agency. They address local needs by offering diverse services that can differ from one district to another, including community health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. For the latest information on available services in your area, reach out to your nearest District Health Department. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs tackle issues at the intersection of human health and the physical environment, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishments (permits, inspections), indoor air quality, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs include mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater management, public water systems, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services offer education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with a variety of birth control methods available. Immunizations are provided through local health departments, offering routine childhood vaccinations at low or no cost, as well as overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track immunizations for individuals and their families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, and referrals to healthcare providers for pregnant women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program, funded federally, provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women without insurance for mammograms or pap tests, meeting specific income and age criteria.
