Idaho's seven health districts operate in conjunction with the Department of Health and Welfare and several state and local entities. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and functions independently from state agencies. They address local health needs by offering a variety of services, which can differ by district, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Environmental Health programs tackle issues at the intersection of human health and the environment, covering areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health Programs, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste management. Local health departments also offer routine childhood vaccinations at their clinics, often at low or no cost for families in need, as well as overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals and their healthcare providers track immunizations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides monthly vouchers for healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, community referrals, individual counseling with dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials, serving pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women, including those without insurance covering these tests, those meeting income guidelines, and specific age groups.
