Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare, along with other state and local organizations. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local requirements by offering diverse services that can differ from one district to another, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and other entities to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism threats and public health emergencies. Environmental Health initiatives focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishments (permits, plan reviews, inspections), indoor air quality (radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs address critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision review, and subsurface sewage evaluations, permits, and inspections. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals, with a variety of birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers are provided for community events upon request. Immunization services are offered through local health departments, with routine childhood vaccinations available at health department clinics or special off-site clinics, often at low or no cost for families in need. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department for specific vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals track their vaccination history and ensure they receive necessary vaccines. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides supplemental nutrition assistance, including healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, and individual counseling with registered dietitians. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers (up to one year postpartum), infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women without insurance coverage for these tests, based on specific age and income criteria.
