Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local organizations. Each district operates independently and is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners. They cater to local demands, providing diverse services that can differ between districts, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism and other public health crises. Environmental Health initiatives focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food, and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (including radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine lab oversight, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs encompass critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater management, public water systems, Rathdrum aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations and permits. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track immunizations for individuals and their healthcare providers. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, registered dietitian counseling, breastfeeding support, and educational materials for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program, funded federally, offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance covering these tests, based on specific age and income criteria.
