About this resource
The Medical Reserve Corps can be reached at 208-239-5208, and the Swine Flu Hotline for Region 6 is available at 208-234-5888. Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare along with various state and local agencies. Each district has a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They address local needs by offering a diverse range of services, which can differ from one district to another, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. For the most current information about available services in your area, contact the nearest District Health Department. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs tackle issues where human health intersects with the environment and local ecosystems. These programs cover areas such as daycare, epidemiology (including animal bites and food/waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (like radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development initiatives focus on critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater management, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations and permits. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with a variety of birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be requested for community presentations. Local health departments also provide routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics or special off-site locations, often at low or no cost for families in need. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department for vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary service that helps individuals keep track of their vaccination history and ensure they receive necessary vaccines on time. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program offers supplemental nutrition assistance, including monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, registered dietitian counseling, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers (up to one year postpartum), infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women who lack insurance for these services, meet income criteria, and fall into specific age categories or have concerning symptoms. Language assistance is available. For general inquiries, locations, and appointments, please call.
