Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local requirements by providing diverse services, which can differ from one district to another. Offerings include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **Programs in Environmental Health include: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs encompass: Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Plan Reviews, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, thorough physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings, as well as HIV testing) and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources can be requested. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health districts administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at health district locations or occasionally at designated off-site clinics. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Travel immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health district to determine the necessary vaccines for specific travel destinations. Vaccines for adults, such as tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you, your family, and your doctor keep track of immunizations and ensure you receive only the necessary vaccines at the right times. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program for women, infants, and children, providing: Monthly healthy food through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, information on community programs and referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling from registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five years. Services are available in English, with interpreters accessible.
