Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local organizations. Each district operates independently from state agencies and tailors its services to meet local demands, which can differ from one district to another. Services offered include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and other public health districts to develop a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits, indoor air quality (including radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs focus on critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision review, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics or special off-site locations, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are also available by appointment. Adult vaccines, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for individuals and their families. The WIC program offers healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, and referrals for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance coverage for these services, with specific age and income criteria.
