Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local organizations. Each district operates independently and has a health board appointed by county commissioners. They address local requirements, offering diverse services that differ from one district to another, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and public health crises. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology, food safety, indoor air quality, lead health, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs encompass critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision review, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive exams, and referrals, offering various birth control methods. Immunizations are provided through local health departments, with routine childhood vaccinations available at low or no cost, and adult vaccines may also be offered. The Immunization Registry helps track vaccinations for individuals and families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program provides nutritious foods, health screenings, nutrition education, and support for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and young children. Additionally, the Women’s Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women without insurance coverage for these tests.
