The seven health districts in Idaho collaborate closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and other local and state organizations. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address community-specific needs by offering a variety of services, which can differ from one district to another. Services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office works with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive state plan for bioterrorism and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs address the interconnections between human health and the physical environment, covering areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology (including Animal Bites and Foodborne Illness), Food Establishments, Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste management. Land Development programs include regulations on critical materials, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, and more.
