Environmental Health programs focus on the relationship between human health and the surrounding physical environment, covering areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste. Land Development programs include Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or special off-site events, often at low or no cost for families in need. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Travelers should contact their local health department for specific vaccine requirements for their destinations. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals and their doctors track immunizations and ensure timely vaccinations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program supplies healthy foods monthly via WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education, community program information, and referrals to healthcare providers, serving pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year, and children under five. The Women’s Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women who lack insurance for these services, meet income guidelines, and fall within specific age criteria.
