Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. These services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and public health crises. FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services that encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, thorough physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals. A wide range of birth control methods is available, along with educational materials and speakers for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations at their clinics or occasionally through special off-site events. These vaccinations are often provided at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department to determine the necessary vaccines for their destinations. Adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps individuals track their immunization history and ensures they receive the necessary vaccines at the right times. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative that provides healthy foods each month through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational resources. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women who lack insurance for these services, meet income criteria, and fall into specific age groups.
