Each district is governed by a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office focuses on bioterrorism planning and collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism and public health crises. Environmental Health initiatives cover areas where human health intersects with the environment, including daycare inspections, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs oversee critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision review, and subsurface sewage evaluations and permits. FAMILY PLANNING services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, offering various birth control methods. IMMUNIZATIONS are provided by local health departments, offering routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, often at low or no cost for those who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Adult vaccines, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be accessible. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that tracks immunizations for individuals and families, ensuring timely vaccinations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, individual counseling with dietitians, and breastfeeding support for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance covering these services. Eligibility includes women aged 50-64, those aged 30-49 who haven't had a pap test in five years or longer, women under 50 with breast cancer symptoms (with clinician approval), and women aged 65 or older who are not eligible for Medicare or lack Medicare part B.
