Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of any state agency. They cater to local needs by offering a diverse range of services, which can differ from one district to another. Available services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified state plan for preparing and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the surrounding ecosystem. **Environmental Health Programs include: Day Care Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs encompass: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact the local health department to determine the required vaccines for specific travel destinations. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health department will need to cover the cost of the vaccine. Adult vaccines, including tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you, your family, and your doctor track immunizations and ensure you receive necessary vaccines on time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that provides: Healthy foods monthly that can be bought with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information and referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: The Women's Health Check is a federally funded program offering free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women. This program targets women without health insurance covering mammograms or pap tests, who meet income guidelines, and fall into one of the following categories: Ages 50-64, Ages 30-49 without a pap test in the last five years, or never had a pap test, under 50 with breast cancer symptoms (with clinician approval), or age 65 or older without Medicare or Medicare part B coverage.
