Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. The services offered can differ from one district to another, addressing local needs with options such as community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism threats and public health emergencies. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: This sector focuses on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and surrounding ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives involve: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service offers Family Planning resources, such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational materials and guest speakers can be arranged for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations at their clinics or through special off-site events. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Travel immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department to find out which vaccines are required for specific destinations. Adult vaccines like tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps you and your healthcare provider keep track of your immunization history and ensures you receive necessary vaccines on time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative that offers: Monthly healthy food packages redeemable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational resources. WIC serves: Pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. To qualify for the Women's Health Check, women must lack health insurance covering mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Ages 50-64; Ages 30-49 with no insurance and symptoms indicating potential breast or cervical cancer; or 65 and older without Medicare or Medicare part B eligibility.
