About this resource

The Medical Reserve Corps can be reached at 208-239-5208, and the Swine Flu Hotline for Region 6 is available at 208-234-5888. Idaho's seven health districts operate in conjunction with the Department of Health and Welfare and numerous state and local entities, each governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners. These districts are independent from any state agency and address local requirements by offering a range of services that can differ by district. Services include community health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. For the most current information about available services, individuals should contact their nearest District Health Department. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and public health crises. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishments (permits, plan reviews, inspections), indoor air quality (radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs encompass critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision review, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay, and overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free and confidential service that helps track immunizations for individuals and their families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers supplemental nutrition assistance, health screenings, nutrition education, and referrals for pregnant women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children under five. The Women’s Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women, including those without insurance covering these tests and those meeting specific age and income criteria. Services are available in English, with interpreters accessible. For general information, locations, and appointments, individuals are encouraged to call.
