Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They address local requirements and offer a range of services that differ by district, including community health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service offers Family Planning assistance, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings, as well as HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational resources and speakers for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are typically low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact the local health department to determine which vaccines are necessary for travel destinations. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health department must pay for the vaccine. Adult vaccines, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your doctor keep track of your immunizations and ensures you receive only the necessary vaccines when required. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, providing: Healthy foods monthly through WIC vouchers, health screenings, health and nutrition classes, information about community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year of age, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: The Women's Health Check is a federally funded program offering free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. This program is for women who lack health insurance covering mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 and have not had a pap test in 5 years or longer, or have never had a pap test; under age 50 with symptoms suggestive of breast cancer (clinician approval required); or age 65 or older without Medicare or Medicare part B.
