Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishments (permits, inspections), indoor air quality (radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. The Immunization Registry is a free and confidential service that helps families and doctors track immunizations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides supplemental nutrition support, including healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, and referrals to healthcare providers for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women’s Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance that covers these tests, based on specific age and income criteria.
