Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various other state and local organizations. Each district features a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of any state agency. These districts cater to local demands, offering diverse services that differ from one district to another. Services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. Environmental Health initiatives tackle issues where human health intersects with the physical environment and local ecosystems. These programs cover areas such as daycare, epidemiology (including animal bites and food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (like radon), lead health, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs oversee critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy tests, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be requested for community outreach. Immunizations for children are offered through local health departments at clinics, with low-cost or free options available for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are by appointment, and travelers should contact the health department for specific vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals track their immunizations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, individual counseling with dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women without insurance covering these tests, based on specific age and income criteria.
