Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local requirements by offering diverse services, which can differ by district. These services include community health nursing, home health care, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, often provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: This encompasses programs that address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs include: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs cover: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service includes education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. Various birth control methods are available, along with educational materials and speakers for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments offer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or special off-site events. These vaccinations are often low cost or free for parents who cannot pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department for vaccine requirements for specific destinations. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be provided. The Immunization Registry, a free and confidential service, helps you and your healthcare provider track immunizations and ensure you receive necessary vaccines on schedule. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC offers healthy foods each month redeemable with vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, information on community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK is a federally funded initiative providing free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance for these services, meet income criteria, and fall into specific age brackets.
