Each district features a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local requirements by providing diverse services, which can differ among districts. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and public health emergencies. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Programs in Environmental Health address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers can be requested for community presentations. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or special off-site events. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department to determine the necessary vaccines for your travel destination. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry (a free, voluntary, and confidential service) keeps track of your immunizations, ensuring you and your healthcare provider are aware of your vaccination status and needs. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that provides: Monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women; Breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum); Infants up to one year of age; and Children under five years of age. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women. Women's Health Check is available for women who lack insurance that covers mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 without insurance and exhibiting symptoms indicative of breast or cervical cancer; or age 65 and older, not eligible for Medicare or lacking Medicare part B.
